Harnessing the Wind in Africa

Harnessing the Wind in Africa One Family Makes a Difference
The need for fresh drinking water is universal. Nowhere is this more apparent than in communities where fresh water means a one-mile round trip hauling water by hand.
Dr. Michel Mulder recognized this pressing, basic need during his medical training in the refugee camps of Darfur and when visiting the remote fishing village of Saadani, Tanzania. In a private initiative, Michel and his son, Jesse, took on the project of providing fresh water to the village.
We're proud to say that Michel's research included Aermotor. "I looked specifically for a tested proven concept with very low maintenance requirements on the long term basis. A design out of the 1930's with people still making it (and smiling) looked like sufficient proof to me," says Michel. Michel and Jesse subsequently purchased two complete Aermotor windmills for their project.
Jesse's research and preparation included completing the hands-on 2005 NMSU Windmill Technology Seminar where he was recognized for his enthusiasm and drive. Traveling from his home in Bussum, Holland, Jesse also took the prize as the participant who came the furthest to attend the annual seminar!
Saadani's water well is 18' deep with 1 1/4" well pipe, and Michel reports that the E (14') Aermotor mill sitting atop a 60' tower easily lifts 15,000 liters in half a day.
Fund raising, preparation, well completion, and windmill installation took about 2 years. The windmill addresses the need of Saadani's 1,000 inhabitants, including 300 schoolkids in their school and the local polyclinic. Saadani Safari Lodge, located nearby, provided shelter and support for the Mulders and two friends who helped in the installation.
Michel and Jesse are planning to install the second windmill, and have begun the fundraising.
Aermotor wishes them continued success.
